Spending less time talking to people who drain us was a huge motivator for the creation of CloseBot and it was all ignited by this story…
About a year and a half ago, my husband let me know he’d be quitting his real estate investing business and starting an AI SAAS. With a pit in my stomach, I agreed that we could try this out. For almost a year, I carried our families finances by selling on-market real estate and managing our rentals while Bryce buckled down and got to work on software developing. We’ve been known to be risk takers and this felt like a big one. It took several months before any money was earned. Come January, CloseBot was really gaining some traction. So much traction that Bryce asked me if I’d be willing to leave my real estate career and work full time on CloseBot Operations.
We were both burned out on off-market real estate investing.
You’d think it was because the real estate market slowed down. It really wasn’t. You can outwork and outsmart any tough market if you have a good attitude and learn to find the motivated. What really pushed us over the edge isn’t what you’d expect.
The biggest challenge that no one in REI really talks about…
…was how we were constantly dealing with people going through the hardest times of their lives.
I’m not talking about my amazing ON-market retail clients here. Off-Market REI is a different beast.
Nearly every homeowner choosing to sell off-market to an investor was either a drug addict, dealing with a death in the family, gone to prison, divorce, dealing with mental or physical illness, etc. It’s incredibly heartbreaking and taxing on you to be talking to literally hundreds of people per week who are dealing with horrible traumas. I’m generalizing here to some degree. We certainly met some WONDERFUL families who we are still in contact with, but the vast majority were honestly awful.
Regularly finding ourselves in dangerous situations
I recall many instances where we had to call the police. From finding drugs in homes, to someone kicking out a window from the inside when we knocked on their door. The most recent time was enough for us to really want to rethink our career. Bryce was at a property way out in the woods talking to a tenant who seemed relatively rational at first but then his demeanor turned on a dime and he ran and grabbed a gun. Come to find out, this person was on the “highly dangerous person” list with the local law enforcement and not allowed to have weapons. Bryce was able to run and get away from the situation but it was enough to make our skin crawl and stop and wonder what in the heck are we doing this for.
We weren’t immediately looking for a way out of the industry at this point. When OpenAI first rolled out with chat-GPT, Bryce knew he could make something of this. It was as if he finally saw all the puzzle pieces of his life come together into one big picture which became CloseBot. Bryce’s experience was in software development, engineering, language learning, automations, lead qualification. My real estate experience, ability to deal with people, familiarity with contracts, extreme attention to detail, and 12 years of knowing Bryce and how to work well with someone like him. All of it was all relevant to CloseBot’s success.
So in short, the thing that we love most about SAAS is that the people we work with on the daily are not threatening to kill us 😉 Jokes aside… it’s the fact that all of our clients are awesome business owners who are pushing to be better in their own businesses and lives. Those are the people we talk with all day every day now, and we LOVE IT. It is so much more peaceful on the heart.
